Video metadata, without re-encoding your footage
MP4 and MOV files place encoded audio and video inside a container. That container also holds playback information and can store descriptive tags, location information or dates.
What rmmetadata clears
The cleaner walks supported container structures and blanks common user-data, metadata and UUID blocks. It clears creation and modification timestamps in supported movie, track and media headers. The report shows the blocks that were changed.
Why video quality stays the same
The tool does not decode or re-encode the footage. Removed blocks are replaced with same-size padding, keeping the existing media offsets intact. A cleaned video may be the same size as the original even when tags were removed.
What can remain
Encoded streams, dedicated timed metadata tracks and proprietary codec fields can hold other information. These are outside this release’s cleaning scope. The cleaner supports self-contained MP4/MOV files, rather than files that reference external media.
Before publishing
Use the file cleaner, then play the downloaded copy and check seeking and audio. Review visible locations and spoken names too. For highly sensitive video, use a specialist inspection and editing workflow.
